Almost every woman experiences a vaginal itch at one point in her life.

The situation is not only a source of a huge discomfort but also worries especially when one does not understand its possible causes.

There are several causes of vaginal itch raging from the obvious like not taking a bath to more complex causes such as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI).

According to Dr Jill Krapf[1], assistant professor in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Texas, San Antonio School of Medicine, it is important to see a doctor even if you think that you know the cause of the itch.

Here are the most common possible causes of a vaginal itch according to research published by the Prevention[2]:

1. Switching soaps or wearing new underwear

Changing a body use product such as a bathing soap or underclothes can cause a condition called contact dermatitis[3] which causes the skin to react to an allergen or irritant that it does not agree with. The vagina can simply itch just because of exposure to something that it doesn't like.

2. Bacterial Vaginosis

This is the imbalance of natural vaginal bacteria. It occurs when the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina is thrown off and a certain type of bacteria which causes itching takes charge. Bacteria vaginosis is responsible for other symptoms such as watery discharge and fishy odour. However, Bacterial Vaginosis is not an infection.

3. Yeast infection

This is the presence of yeast growing inside the vagina where it causes a lot of discomforts. Yeast growth causes inflammation of the vaginal tissue causing the terrible itch. Other symptoms of yeast infection[4] include thick, white, curd-like vaginal discharge and a burning sensation when peeing.

4. Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) such as trichomoniasis, chlamydia[5], and genital herpes can cause itching which is usually accompanied by a vaginal discharge among other symptoms.

5. Menopause

Vaginal itching can be caused by hormonal changes that occur during and after menopause[6]. Vaginal atrophy, which is the drying and thinning of the vagina after menopause, causes vaginal itching and discomfort.
