Baby is left in agony for three months and parents are suspected of sex abuse after nurse inserted wipes into the child to stop bleeding - and forgot to remove them

  • Nurse wrongly inserted three wipes into girl's vagina to stem post-natal bleeding
  • She then forgot about them, leading to the girl developing a severe infection
  • Mother Tatiana took the girl to a doctor who removed the wipes before police launched an investigation into the family on suspicion of sexually abusing her
  • Case dropped after nurse admitted her mistake and she has now been charged

A baby girl was left in agony for more than three months after a nurse inserted wipes in her vagina to stop post-natal bleeding, then forgot to remove them.

The horrific case in Russia[2] led to the child's father and other family members facing 'hell' as they fell under suspicion of child sex crimes.

Mother-of-three Tatiana Sibasova, from the city of Chita, in Siberia, saw her daughter was often in pain especially when urinating, that she was frequently in a bad mood, and cried a lot.

Mother-of-three Tatiana Sibasova took her daughter to the doctor three months after she was born because of a foul odor when the wipes were discovered

Two months after the girl was born she noticed a foul-smelling odor and took the girl to the doctor, who diagnosed a severe inflammation of the genital area.

Tatiana noticed the end of one of the wipes and removed it from her daughter, but the problems persisted.

One month later the girl was taken back to hospital and a second surgical wipe was found inside her.

The girl was discharged from hospital but the problem continued and subsequently a third wipe was found and removed under general anaesthetic.

The wipe had been embedded for so long that the girl's hymen had been damaged, doctors said.

Concerned medics called police and the family were placed under investigation for sexual crimes.

A criminal case was opened against the girl's parents, an aunt and a female sibling were suspected of 'violent actions of sexual character' against a minor, a crime that can lead to 20 years in jail.

'The family went through hell,' said their lawyer Anastasiya Kopteeva.

Concerned medics at this clinic in Chita, Siberia, had the family placed under investigation for sexual crimes before it was revealed one of their own staff was to blame

'Law enforcement suspected the girl's father, mother, aunt and even older sister.

'This girl was asked whether she had played doctor with her baby sister.

'The aunt who had recently lost a child was suspected.'

Tatiana, sobbing, said: 'There were interrogations, and our family was under suspicion.'

She was asked: 'Perhaps, your husband abused her or your elder daughter?'

The ordeal was 'scary' she said.

But investigators realised the wipes were of a type only available in hospitals.

Detectives then traced the nurse who had cleaned the girl after birth.

The woman Lyudmila Cherkasova said she was 'scared' to come forward earlier, fearing she would lose her job.

Doctors told investigators that bleeding - effectively a girl's first period triggered by the withdrawal of hormones she is exposed to in the womb - is common.

It typically occurs two to three days after birth and can be cleaned externally using wipes without having to insert anything.

The sex crime investigation was dropped and the nurse is now charged with medical negligence causing injury to a child.

She faces up to four months in jail if convicted.

'I want her to be fired and put in jail,' said the mother.

'She has not lost her job and instead laughs and jokes during the court case.'
